Nobel Prize-winner Juan Ramón Jiménez wrote this lovable poetic narrative in Spanish, in the first person, detailing the relationship and affection developing between the author and his close companion, the legendary donkey Platero. The poetic text of “Platero Y Yo” makes it ideal material to be read aloud. It so appealed to Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, who was a close friend of famed guitarist Andrés Segovia, that he created this enchanting musical setting for the story of Platero and his life and times. Castelnuovo-Tedesco was particularly famous for his guitar compositions, having composed a guitar concerto and many shorter pieces featuring the classic Spanish guitar.
Italian guitarist Emanuele Segre, already familiar to music lovers through his Delos 2-CD survey “The Spanish Guitar” (DE 3347), and narrator Moni Ovadia, one of Italy’s most noted live-theatre celebrities, have collaborated to bring this poignant work to life. Segre has added a Castelnuovo-Tedesco transcription of Maurice Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante defunte as a salute to the endearing life of the legendary Platero.
