Prior to the emergence of Ottorino Respighi, Italy had produced no significant composer of non-vocal work since the high Baroque. Deeply influenced by lessons with Rimsky-Korsakov as well as a sojourn in Berlin under the heady influence of Richard Strauss, Respighi strove to recapture the vanished orchestral style and spirits of Vivaldi, Corelli and Scarlatti. Blending both historic themes and contemporary trends in orchestration, Resphigi brought centuries of music together in these featured works.
