Prior to the emergence of Ottorino Respighi, Italy had produced no significant composer of non-vocal work since the high Baroque. Deeply influenced by lessons with Rimsky-Korsakov as well as a sojourn in Berlin under the heady influence of Richard Strauss, Respighi strove to recapture the vanished orchestral style and spirits of Vivaldi, Corelli and Scarlatti.
